Crunchyroll is now entirely belonging to Sony's Funimation Group. Already in December 2020, it became known that Sony became the most well-known streaming platform for animes for $ 1.175 billion.
As the company announces now, this mega-deal has now been completely brought over the stage. In his opinion, Sony, however, drops a decisive sentence in which, above all members of the PS plus subscription should accommodate.
Crunchyroll could become part of PS plus
Sony does not make a concrete statement about what will happen to the anime service. However, a passage in combination with the latest rumor allows a decisive decision:
With the accession of Crunchyroll we have the opportunity to use anime fans like never before and offer you the anime experience on each platform of your choice: cinema, events, home entertainment, games, streaming, television - everywhere and on each Fashion how fans want to experience their anime. Our goal is to create a uniform anime subscription experience as soon as possible.
What could mean that? As Eurogamer has learned, the anime service should be offered as part of a more expensive premium subscription by PS Plus. This means that PS4 and PS5 fans can also enjoy the anime service when they are ready to pay a higher price than for the current PS plus subscription.
But the more expensive premium subscription could contain more than just Crunchyroll. Sony's last shopping include the French Streaming Service Wakanim, Madman Anime and Animelab from Australia and Funimation. Since Sony strives to standardize all anime subscriptions, the anime services could be offered as a package with the more expensive PS plus subscription.
This would also fit the PS plus Video Pass, a service currently tested by Sony, with the Polish PS plus users can stream movies and series as part of their membership. In a worldwide implementation, Crunchyroll will be part of the passport.
Considers that this is a rumor. Eurogamer does not specify any source where this information comes from. Thus, we should wait in which form Sony performs the standardization of all anime services.
What is Crunchyroll?
The streaming service for animes is one of the most famous and most successful services of its kind. Overall, around 120 million registered users of over 200 countries use this service.
But CRUnchyroll is not just the streaming service. In addition, Crunchyroll is organizing its own large conventions and also involved in anime production and by Crunchyroll Games at the associated video game production. These rights are now also at Sony.
Either way is Sony now a serious competition for streaming services. Who likes to look animes, probably does not pass to Sony anymore.
