Sony has probably redesigned your console and has launched a new PS5 model. A smaller heat sink should make the console lighter and hotter. Even so, the highest temperatures should not be a problem.
Sony has apparently presented a new PS5 model. The first YouTubers and journalists have already examined the new model. There are some things that stand out in particular with the new model:
- The heat sink has become significantly smaller and is no longer as massive.
- The console weighs 300 grams less.
- It is also said that a new fan came to the console.
- According to the first users, the console should be heated a little more and the energy consumption should be a bit higher.
Above all, the reduced thermal sink is currently being discussed and if this could have a negative effect on the refrigeration and performance of the long-term PS5.
What is the use of the heat sink? In general, the heat sink helps to better dissipate the heat of the CPU and the GPU. These components are made of copper or aluminum and are often between hot hardware and a fan.
Who is discussing there? Technological YouTuber Austin Evans has dismantled the new PlayStation 5 model and has examined it in detail (through YouTube.com). In the summary below the YouTube video of him, he writes about reduced cooling:
Think about it as a PC. If you delete a large CPU heat sink in favor of a smaller one, the exhaust air of my system would be hotter since the general temperatures of the system are higher since the weakest cooler can not keep the rhythm. That is exactly what is happening here (on PS5) in my opinion.
Players and journalists see the new model of PS5 divided, but behind there is probably a Sony sensible decision. And the increase in heat does not have to be a problem for the long-term console. For a clear statement, there is currently a lack of significant data or an official Sony statement.
It is likely that there are many data behind Sony's decision.
Why was there the change? Sony's decision reducing the size of the fridge was probably not hasty. An official press release or a message from Sony has not yet been officially launched and until now the new model is only available in Japan and Australia.
That is why sites like Verge suspect that Sony carried out optimizations in the production of PS5 (through theverge.com).
With a large amount of user data (telemetry data) of millions of consoles using players, Sony should have data and details more than enough about console temperatures. At least Sony had declared in a conversation that they wanted to use user data to optimize the velocity of the ps5 fan (through PCMAG.com).
Therefore, it is obvious that the cooler can be made smaller without having to run the risk of significantly higher temperatures. And if so, the highest temperatures do not care about most players, since fans eliminate heat effectively.
That's why the heat should not be a problem: Basically, the following is applied to computers and consoles: As soon as the heat increases inside the device, the fans also start to rotate faster to transmit heat to the outside.
If there are problems of overheating with the PS5, the fans would also have to work faster to better squeeze the heat of the console. However, according to the initial reports, this does not seem to be the case.
Therefore, some suspect that heat development is not much greater than before, but, however, the new fan that Sony has installed simply transports the hot air to the outside more efficiently than the previous model. In the long term, it could even be better. But that is speculation that there is still no evidence. Here we have to wait until there is tangible data available.
The first rumors about a new PS5 model had already appeared in the spring. Sony probably just changed a small thing here that very few users have probably noticed:
Sony is probably planning a new version of the PS5, with a change
